Volunteers clock up 475 hours on site

Updated: Oct 11

The Te Hōnonga a Iwi volunteers had a productive July, clocking up 475 hours on site and completing a long list of tasks.

Project co-ordinator Nicky Shave says 174 volunteers took part in 13 working bees across the month.

One of the toughest jobs was clearing 150 square metres of vine-invested land that’s part of the expanded restoration area at Rosedale Park.

Our amazing volunteers also managed to release 3000 natives from Kikuyu in the control and 2023 restoration zones, collect two tonnes of weeds and pest plants, and lay out 14 new traps on the trapline to replace stolen equipment.

The groups deconstructed six bioreactors and rebuilt them in the 2024/25 restoration area. One bioreactor was filled with a tonne of biomass to start the composting process.

Our team collected 2000 natives from the nursery at Paremoremo Prison, and another group planted out the original bioreactor pad and infilled natives into the area on the border of the carpark.

Another 50 natives were planted in the 2024 restoration area, bringing the total planted to date this year to 400.

It was fantastic to welcome some new organisations to the restoration – Wilson School, a Chinese gardening group and local businesses Forbes Packaging, Strategi and Defend. Thanks for all your efforts to support our work.

And a big thanks also to long-time supporters Rangitoto College, Kristin School and Stormwater 360 for their tireless work across the month.
