Mulch, mud and lots of helpers

Updated: Aug 1, 2022

It was raincoats and gumboots for a group of about 30 volunteers who turned out on a very wet July Sunday to begin moving mulch on the Te Hōnonga a Iwi site into our newly built bioreactors.

Some of our youngest supporters were the most energetic on the day, helping carry hundreds of buckets of mulch across some slippery surfaces.

A big thanks to the team from NZ Machine Hire who donated the equipment we needed to help shift three tonnes of mulch.

The mulch will stay in the bioreactors for a year, as it transforms into bio-organic compost material which will be used in our 2023 planting season.

Untangled Landscapes has generously donated bio-organic compost for this year’s tree planting which will take place later in the year.

There is still plenty of work to be done on the site – we need to fill 20 bioreactors in the next few weeks to ensure we have enough compost in 12 months.

There will be two more Saturday working bees on 6 August and 13 August from 10am to 1 pm – please email hello@restoringrosedalepark.org.nz if you can lend a hand. You can park at North Harbour Hockey and walk to the site in Volkner Place

Here are some photos of our volunteers in action.
