Te Hōnonga a Iwi is thrilled to be part of Forest and Bird’s Give a Trap programme.
This initiative allows people to donate equipment to the community groups around Aotearoa tackling the challenge of trapping pests in their local area to support The Predator Free 2050 mission.
The project’s website says the community groups are making a huge impact, but they struggle to get funding for all the traps they need.
Through the platform, people who want to support the drive to protect our native birds by eradicating pests can identify a group working in their local area and donate the money needed to buy a trap.
Give a Trap® then organises supply and delivery of the trap directly to the group.
Te Hōnonga a Iwi project co-ordinator Nicky Shave says any traps donated to our group can be used throughout the Alexander Stream catchment to support the pest control work being done by Upper Waitematā Ecology Network Pest Co-ordinator Louis Foot.
Louis is supporting several local schools and businesses, as well as the Te Hōnonga a Iwi pest control youth leaders, to monitor pest traplines in areas surrounding Rosedale Park.
“We hope local businesses will find the Give a Trap platform an affordable way to support the change Te Hōnonga a Iwi and UWEN are trying to achieve,” Nicky says.
Donating a trap could also be a good thank-you gift to give an employee or a friend. Or it would be a perfect birthday or Christmas gift for someone who is passionate about supporting the environment, she says.
Te Hōnonga a Iwi currently needs another 30 traps – be the first to donate a trap here.
