Funding boost for student-led restoration

Te Hōnonga a Iwi is excited to announce we have secured a Disability-Led Climate Adaptation Pilot grant of $29,100 from the Auckland Council!

Project Coordinator Nicky Shave explains that this grant helps to support the students' vision to learn to grow fresh food produce and contribute to community resilience.

“Wilson School students will grow tomatoes and chillis, along with other fruits and vegetables to grow food for the local community, all while contributing to climate adaptation, decarbonising, climate action, and improving freshwater quality of local awa.”

Wilson School and Takapuna Grammar students will come fortnightly during the school term to undertake one hour’s mahi in the mara kai, learning a range of skills such as composting, caring for chickens, soil analysis, pest animal trapping, and regenerative agriculture techniques.

Te Hōnonga a Iwi is committed to welcoming students of all abilities on site, and this funding ensures we have the knowledge and tools to continue doing so!

And the kids can’t wait to get stuck in. When sharing the exciting news of the new funding with the students, one of the student leaders said, “Thank you, let’s get on with the work!”  And work they did, after a stop for celebratory cake.
