As we focus more and more on the kind of world we want to live in, it’s not necessarily enough to just wish each other a Merry Christmas, we want it to be a sustainable Christmas as well.

Here are some ways to ensure your Christmas is sustainable while spreading peace and joy.
1. Get creative with wrapping paper
Wrapping paper can be a huge source of waste at Christmas time, as it is not always recyclable. Instead, alternatives like newspapers, brown paper, or even fabrics could be used. Spruce them up with fun ribbons, which can be reused for next year.
2. Make your own Christmas crackers
There is a whole world of DIY Christmas cracker templates out there. Instead of buying your own, make your own. You can fill with more sustainable gifts and trinkets and make up your own original jokes!
3. Shop local
Support Kiwi businesses over Christmas! Not only does this cut back carbon emissions from international shipping, but it is also a great way to be an active community member.
4. Take it slow
Nothing beats viewing Christmas lights or attending festive markets. Instead of travelling by car, go on a family walk or take public transport. This saves on carbon emissions and the stress of finding a park!
5. Gift from our Christmas gift guide
We all know someone who is impossibly hard to buy for at Christmas. If you are stuck for ideas, take a look at Te Hōnonga a Iwi’s Christmas gift guide and give the gift that grows!
6. Have a low-waste Christmas dinner
Sharing a meal with whānau and friends is one of the highlights of Christmas Day. To reduce food waste, get creative with leftovers, as nothing beats a Boxing Day sandwich. You can also plan portions for the size of your party and compost scraps where possible.
7. Handmade decorations
Don’t let Instagram shame you into thinking you need a new look for your tree each year. Handmade decorations are not only better for the planet, but they also become sentimental treasures passed along from year to year.
This list isn’t the be-all and end-all; there are plenty of ways you can have a sustainable Christmas with your whānau. Whether you try all seven or just manage one, we thank you for making sustainable choices and wish you a Merry Christmas from everyone at Te Hōnonga a Iwi.
